Tournament Review

1989: A Chaotic Swiss Championship

The Swiss Chess Federation celebrates its centenary with the jubilee Swiss Individual Championship in Biel, where the national championship is being held as part of the chess festival for the third time. The Schwyz player Beat Züger wins the title ahead of the Bernese favourite Lucas Brunner. The tournament is held as an international event and supplemented by six foreign players. The Argentinian Daniel Campora manages to take first place in the standings.

This championship, however, does not remain in the best memory, being marked by several chaotic incidents, as two Swiss players withdraw from the tournament midway through “for personal reasons”. Nor does any Swiss player manage to achieve a grandmaster norm.

It is a festival with Soviet supremacy in the grandmaster tournament. Arriving as world number three, behind Kasparov and Karpov, the young Russian Vassily Ivanchuk, aged 20, lives up to his reputation and wins, level on points but with the better tie-break score, ahead of his compatriot Lev Polugaevsky, the oldest participant at 54. After a cautious start to the tournament, the Ukrainian lays down an impressive final sprint with five wins and two draws. The 1988 winner, Ivan Sokolov, finishes third. Also worth mentioning is the participation of Anthony Miles, winner of the 1977 and 1983 tournaments, who plays under the American flag because he has fallen out with the British federation.
