Tournament Review

1990: The Red Carpet for Anatoly Karpov

A major event at the Kongresshaus: it is at the Biel Chess Festival that Anatoly Karpov, aged 39, makes his appearance before going on a few months later to contest his World Championship duel with Garry Kasparov in New York and Lyon, his fifth and last “official” World Championship match, which he will again lose. Because perestroika is in full swing in the Soviet Union, every statement by Karpov immediately makes headlines around the world.

The former World Champion from 1975 to 1985, now world championship runner-up and still number two in the world, impresses with his presence. The Muscovite sets up his base in Magglingen, gives several simultaneous exhibitions and shows himself close to the public, which immediately earns him much sympathy. He clearly dominates the tournament and wins it undefeated, finishing 1.5 points ahead of the likewise unbeaten Swede Ulf Andersson. The first visit to Biel by the French World Junior Champion Joël Lautier, aged 17, is less successful, as he has to settle for last place. The Soviet triumph is completed by two representatives of the chess superpower taking the first two places in the master tournament.
