Tournament Review

1988: Sokolov’s Triumph and Anand’s Misstep

The grandmaster tournament ends with two undefeated players level in a neck-and-neck race: defending champion Boris Gulko, aged 41, and the young Ivan Sokolov, a 20-year-old from Sarajevo. The tie-break narrowly favours the youngster, who can thus celebrate the first major victory of his still young chess career.

The highest-rated player in the tournament, Vlastimil Hort, rated 2595 Elo, finishes far back in eighth place. He scores exactly as many points as the Women’s World Champion from 1978 to 1991, the Georgian Maya Chiburdanidze, who manages only two wins in the 11 rounds. Her predecessor as World Champion, Nona Gaprindashvili, titleholder from 1962 to 1978 and also from Georgia, plays in the second invitational tournament.

Also worth mentioning is the first appearance of Viswanathan Anand, aged 18, who a few months earlier had become the first grandmaster from his country and the first Indian to win the World Junior Championship title. The future world number one experiences ups and downs and finishes the “World Mixed” tournament in fifth place. Against the Colombian Alonso Zapata he suffers an incredible defeat in just six moves. The game Zapata–Anand follows this course: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. Nxe5 d6 4. Nf3 Nxe4 5. Nc3 Bf5?? 6. De2 and 1–0. Vishy's later appearances in Biel, however, are crowned with success: in 1993 he wins the Interzonal tournament, securing one of the last tickets for the Candidates tournaments, and in 1997 he wins the tournament held for the festival’s 30th anniversary.
