Tournament Review

1982: Lucerne Steals the Show

The highlight of the Swiss and international chess year takes place in... Lucerne, which hosts the 25th Chess Olympiad.

Fewer players than usual make their way to Biel. John Nunn, a 29-year-old doctor of mathematics, wins the grandmaster tournament. Later, the Londoner will become the author of highly respected chess books. Second place goes, on equal points, to Florin Gheorghiu, the former World Junior Champion, now 38 years old. He had won that title on 22 November 1963, the ill-fated date of the assassination of President Kennedy.

In his first appearance in a tournament of this class, the Fribourg player Fernand Gobet performs excellently and achieves his first International Master norm. In addition, he scores a fine victory against Vlastimil Hort, the top seed in the grandmaster tournament with a rating of 2600 Elo, who once again, as in the previous summer, has to settle for an honourable placing.
