Tournament Review

1981: A Hunt for Records

Two new records: first, a record number of participants, with 1,181 players, and second, the number of tournaments offered: 20. The year 1981 is dominated by the Karpov–Korchnoi World Championship match, in which the Swiss resident is clearly defeated this time.

After 1979, the Kongresshaus once again hosts the Swiss Championships, for the sixth time in Biel’s history. As in 1979, the winner is Heinz Wirthensohn, who finishes fourth in the grandmaster tournament behind the German Eric Lobron, the Czech Vlastimil Hort and the Briton Michael Stean.

The rank outsider Eric Lobron, an International Master, only 21 years old and rated just 2395 Elo, steals the show from the clear favourite, Vlastimil Hort. Nevertheless, Vlastimil Hort will remain associated with the Biel Chess Festival for many years. The newly crowned 1980 German Champion, Eric Lobron, prevails thanks to a better tie-break score, Sonneborn-Berger points, and scores his first major success in Seeland. In his best years he will later climb as high as 20th place in the world rankings.
