Tournament Review

1980: Israel’s First Triumph

Hans Suri keeps the event comfortably on course, with 900 participants present and a budget of 160,000 francs. A welcome change: the chess festival is now supported by one of the three major Swiss banks, the Swiss Bank Corporation, giving the organizers new room for manoeuvre in planning further tournaments.

After winning the Master Open in 1979, Yehuda Grünfeld does not let himself be diverted from the road to victory and now also wins the grandmaster tournament. At the age of 24, the International Master, who will go on to play in six Chess Olympiads during his career, outperforms four grandmasters, all of whom are ranked higher than him.

Yehuda Grünfeld, winner of the master tournament in 1979 and of the grandmaster tournament in 1980, is the first Israeli to enter his name on the festival’s roll of honour. But he is by no means the last, for Israel is one of the foreign nations that is well represented throughout the years and will celebrate further successes in Biel. Israel also gains honours in the master tournament, as the American Israel Zilber wins, level on points with the Yugoslav Rukavina and the Swiss player Züger.
