Tournament Review

Adorján Wins the 9th Olot International Tournament

From 16 to 30 March, the ninth Olot International Tournament was held in the rooms of the Círculo Olotense. The winner was the Hungarian András Adorján.

Adorján dominated the event through his fighting spirit and his constant determination to play for a win. His approach made a strong impression on Grandmaster Miguel Ángel Quinteros, who supplied this report and the accompanying comments for Jaque.

The Hungarian did not even use the rest day to visit one of Olot's great natural attractions, its forty-eight majestic volcanoes. He preferred to remain completely concentrated on the competition. He promised that the following year he would return to admire the volcanoes and treat chess as the excursion instead.

The tournament was marked by unusually combative play. The system of special prizes for fighting chess, devised in Olot by Jorge Perés, encouraged the players to avoid routine draws and to seek victory whenever the position allowed it. The idea was so successful that other organisers could profitably adopt it in order to increase the sporting interest of their own tournaments.

Adorján's final triumph was fully deserved. He combined energetic opening play with confidence in complicated positions and showed a strong practical sense throughout the event. Even when the objective evaluation of a position was unclear, he continually created difficult problems for his opponents.

The ninth edition once again confirmed Olot's place among the leading international tournaments in Spain. The work of the local organisers, the atmosphere surrounding the event and the players' willingness to fight made the competition both attractive and memorable.
