Tournament Review

Csom and Kurajica Win the 8th Olot International Tournament

The traditional Olot International Tournament was held from 10 to 24 March. This year's edition introduced important changes, above all the expansion of the field to twelve players, and the result was an event of greater strength and interest.

The tournament also marked the 25th anniversary of Club Ajedrez Olot, the organising club. No effort or expense was spared in preparing an event worthy of the occasion. The field was stronger than in previous years and the competition reached FIDE Category 6.

The struggle for first place remained open throughout the tournament. The Hungarian grandmaster Csom and the Yugoslav grandmaster Kurajica proved the most consistent players and eventually shared first place. Their success was based on solid play, good preparation and greater steadiness at the decisive moments.

The remaining participants produced an event rich in fighting chess. Several players alternated impressive victories with unexpected setbacks, and the enlarged field made it difficult for anyone to establish a decisive lead. The final result reflected the balance of a competition in which the leaders had to work hard for every point.

The tournament confirmed the continuing progress of the Olot organisation. In its 25 years of existence, Club Ajedrez Olot had already provided Spanish chess with eight international tournaments, a clear reflection of the growing enthusiasm for chess in the province of Gerona.

In summary, it was an outstanding tournament and a fitting celebration of the club's anniversary. The organisation once again demonstrated its ability to stage an international event of genuine sporting importance.
