Tournament Review

The 10th Olot International Tournament

The tenth edition of the Olot International Tournament was played from 9 to 22 March 1975. Reaching its tenth year represented an important milestone for an event that had become one of the traditional international competitions on the Spanish calendar.

The organisers once again assembled a varied international field, combining experienced foreign masters with leading Spanish players. The competition was closely fought and the struggle for the leading places remained undecided until the final rounds.

As in previous editions, the Olot tournament was characterised by its emphasis on fighting chess. The special awards intended to encourage ambitious play helped to reduce the number of short, uneventful draws and produced a large number of hard-fought games.

The foreign players generally showed greater consistency, while the Spanish representatives produced several excellent individual results but lacked the steadiness required to challenge for overall victory. The final standings were decided by performance in the decisive final phase rather than by any overwhelming domination from the opening rounds.

The tenth tournament confirmed both the sporting value of the event and the remarkable organisational work carried out over the years by Club Ajedrez Olot. Few Spanish towns of comparable size had maintained an international competition of this standard for so long.

The organisers, arbiters and local supporters again contributed to an event conducted in excellent conditions. Olot had become not merely an isolated tournament venue, but an established meeting place for international and Spanish chess.
