The Royal Dutch Chess Federation (KNSB) has existed for 150 years and this is celebrated with a strong Dutch Championship in the Galgenwaard stadium in Utrecht. From 2 to 9 July 2023, the field includes defending champion Erwin l'Ami as well as Anish Giri, Jorden van Foreest and Max Warmerdam. In addition, the Women's Dutch Championship is being played simultaneously - won by Eline Roebers, she is simply the strongest. Among the men there is a clear favorite for the title: Anish Giri. Giri must overcome his main competitor Jorden van Foreest. As in 2022, the knockout formula will be used. Once again, the manager of the Max Euwe Centre, Erwin l'Ami, again goes deep into the event: in the semi-finals he evens the score in the classical games against Van Foreest, but Erwin loses out in the faster time controls. In the final, Jorden van Foreest plays against Anish Giri. They know each other's playing inside and out; In the two classical games the opening is followed by a repetition of moves. The blitz games bring the tension. In the second game, Giri fails to win, but puts things in order in the next game: Giri wins and achieves his fifth title.
