Tournament Review

The 83rd Swiss Championship took place in Baden from 2 to 15 October 1983; the press describes the formal opening on Monday, 3 October. The Meisterturnier A was played at the Kursaal. Schachgesellschaft Baden, celebrating its seventieth anniversary (1913–1983), organized the championships, which attracted more than 500 players across the various sections. Mayor Victor Rickenbach made the ceremonial first move. For the first time, both the leading men's and women's sections consisted of fourteen players in a thirteen-round all-play-all format. Resident foreign players were also admitted: Ricardo Szmetan, an Argentinian living in Lausanne and playing for Sion, competed in Meisterturnier A. Béla Tóth and Gerhard Krähenbühl appeared in the advance entry list but not in the actual field; Fabio Righetti and Hans Speck took part.

Andreas Huss won his first three games, against Hansjürg Känel, Hans Speck and Hanspeter Schärer. Känel lost his opening two games before beating Szmetan in round 3. Huss led with 3/3, half a point ahead of Heinz Wirthensohn. Peter Hammer's game against Uriel Gast was adjourned again after nine hours of play; the final table records a win for Hammer. In round 10 Huss drew with Wirthensohn. A crucial setback for Wirthensohn came in round 11, when he lost to Martin Christoffel. In round 12 Huss defeated Uriel Gast, while Meinrad Schauwecker beat Känel.

Huss secured his first national title with 9½/13 after a last-round draw with Jonathan Gast; Wirthensohn also drew, against Markus Trepp, and finished on 9. Schauwecker was undefeated and took third place with 8½. Trepp, Känel and Szmetan scored 8, ranked in that order by Sonneborn–Berger. Huss, aged 33, scored seven wins, five draws and one loss, to Schauwecker. He had recently devoted most of his time to chess after working as a translator. Reports highlighted his previous Swiss Olympiad appearances and pursuit of the international master title.

In the parallel women's section Tatjana Lematschko scored 11½, but was not yet eligible for the Swiss title. Erika Vogel, second on 9½, became national champion; Angela Cathrein and Claude Baumann scored 8. These results provide context only: the present files cover the men's Meisterturnier A.
