Partial reconstruction of a 98-player Swiss tournament. Known results and readable game scores are retained; dollar statistics are missing differences only. Unknown final points, games and W/D/L are blank, not zero. Complete nine-result players have no dollar tags, even for published ranks; the incomplete roster cannot reproduce all official rank numbers. Four scores have truncated movetext because clipping 5 is cropped. Four games have unknown rounds and are placed last in PGN. Dates conflict (7-15 July versus a Sunday finish on 16 July); exact round dates omitted. Moret-Kyburz is one PGN win marked as a forfeit, never counted twice.

Tournament Review

The 78th Swiss Championship was played at Hotel Kulm in St. Moritz. The national tournament had 98 participants and nine rounds under the Swiss system; entry required at least 450 points on the Swiss domestic rating list. Approximately 330 players took part across five categories. Fridolin Jeker of Basel directed the national tournament. One report gives 7–15 July, whereas the 18 July report says the championships ended on Sunday (16 July). The exact round dates and final day remain unresolved.

Charles Partos, still representing Romania on the available FIDE list, won his first six games, including an eight-hour struggle against Hansjürg Känel in round 5. He led by one point. A draw with Edwin Bhend in round 7 narrowed the lead; in round 8 Markus Trepp defeated him in 22 moves. Känel took the lead and drew with Trepp in the last round to secure his second Swiss title, after Ascona 1976. He finished on 7½/9, with seven wins, one draw and one loss. Partos, Bhend, Diego Garcés and Trepp scored 7; Buchholz placed Partos second, Bhend third, Garcés fourth and Trepp fifth. Adrian Hälg and Hubert Ludin scored 6½, as confirmed by two German reports; the French report gives 6.

The regional reports preserve all nine results for several Valais participants. Olivier Noyer scored 5; Eddy Beney and Jean-Paul Moret scored 4½. Beney's first-round draw with Heinz Schaufelberger reportedly lasted 110 moves and eleven hours. Moret beat H. Kyburz by forfeit in round 8. The final official extract published on 5 August supplies additional places, points and Buchholz totals, but not the full field or complete pairings. Unidentified opponents and missing games have not been fabricated.

In the women's event Myrta Ludwig and Theres Leu tied on 6½ and were to contest a playoff. The present files cover the national tournament only; the women's and lower sections are contextual information.
