Tournament Review

Korchnoi supreme in Malmo

The fourth Sigeman Wernbro tournament was won convincingly by former world-championship challenger Viktor Korchnoi. He scored 7.5/9 and finished a point ahead of Anthony Miles; Curt Hansen was third on 6, and Pia Cramling was the best Swedish player in fourth place after, among other results, defeating Miles.

The category XII event was one of the strongest and best-organized editions so far. Limhamns SK, with Johan Berntsen at the centre of the operation, offered excellent conditions at the Savoy Hotel, strong commentary and substantial public and media interest. Ulf Andersson declined his invitation and Miles replaced him. Korchnoi and Miles clearly separated themselves from the field: by round seven they were the only unbeaten players.

Korchnoi displayed the competitive energy that still drove him at the age of 65. In the last round Miles tried to win with Black but accepted an early draw after Korchnoi forced the issue; the leader then converted a difficult position against Ari Ziegler to seal first place. Cramling and Hector both started unevenly, while Juan Bellon recovered from a poor opening. Johan Hellsten, Robert Bator and Jevgenij Agrest pursued title norms, but none reached the required score. Ziegler nevertheless supplied much of the Swedish fighting spirit and missed an IM norm only after losing to Hector in the final round.
