Tournament Review

Ivan Sokolov wins in Malmo; Hellsten earns the IM title

The third Sigeman Wernbro & Co tournament produced another notable Swedish success even though the trophy went abroad. Ivan Sokolov won with 6.5/9, while Ulf Andersson, Matthew Sadler and Michal Krasenkow shared second place on 6. Johan Hellsten scored 4.5 and completed the requirements for the international master title.

Limhamns SK again staged a strong category XII round robin at the Savoy Hotel, supported by the Chess Academy and the sponsoring law firm. Ferdinand Hellers had been expected to play but withdrew after a recurrence of severe allergies. Sokolov, the top-rated player, started as favourite alongside Andersson. Their fourth-round encounter was a hard-fought victory for the Bosnian grandmaster.

Sokolov, Krasenkow, Hjartarson and Hector shared the early lead. Hector might have begun with four straight wins, but a series of time-pressure adventures eventually caught up with him. Sadler confirmed his growing strength on his first appearance in Sweden, while Andersson's endgame technique remained a central feature of the event. Sixteen-year-old Giovanni Vescovi endured a difficult debut and finished last. Stellan Brynell's last-round win over Rune Djurhuus was his first victory in twenty games in the Sigeman series.
