Tournament Review

1986: A New Dimension

The spectators and organizers speak of a transitional year between the 1985 Interzonal tournament and the 1987 tournament, the 20th anniversary. But they even expand the tournament programme further, with a grandmaster tournament that reaches Category 12 for the first time, as well as another closed tournament and a women’s tournament, won by the Georgian Nana Alexandria. Not to be forgotten are the additional open events, which extend over several days or even the entire duration of the festival.

All this, however, is possible only because of a change of sponsor, with UBS giving way after five years to Credit Suisse. Dr William Wirth, one of the general directors of the major bank headquartered in Zurich, is strongly committed to supporting chess. Other organizers also benefit from the bank’s involvement in chess, among them the Swiss Chess Federation. The support will continue until 1997.

There are three new developments to mention: first, the results can be viewed via videotext; second, a chess computer, “Mephisto Amsterdam”, takes part in an open tournament for the first time; and third, the former world championship candidate Lev Polugaevsky from the Soviet Union is invited to the grandmaster tournament.

After first becoming acquainted with the Seeland air at the 1985 Interzonal tournament, Lev Polugaevsky, rated 2575 Elo, celebrates a fine success with a strong performance. In the past, several of his rivals here, Korchnoi, Lobron, Hort, Miles, Nunn and Hübner, had also made successful debuts. It should also be noted that Vlastimil Hort represents Germany for the first time, one year after emigrating from Czechoslovakia.

After 11 rounds, Polugaevsky shares the lead with Eric Lobron, but has the better tie-break score. The two big favourites for tournament victory, Viktor Korchnoi, rated 2650 Elo, and Robert Hübner, rated 2620, are surprisingly found in the lower half of the table. The Swiss player nevertheless has one small success: he is the only one to beat Polugaevsky, thereby winning a prestige duel against a former colleague from the Soviet Union. His first duel against a player from his former homeland, after he had left the communist regime in 1976, had come in 1982 at the Chess Olympiad in Lucerne against none other than the future World Champion Garry Kasparov, when he was playing on first board for Switzerland. On that occasion there was even the otherwise customary handshake before the start of the game, something Soviet players usually avoided with “defectors”. Kasparov later gave a detailed account of this episode in his first book, Child of Change.

Final standings in the grandmaster tournament (Category 12): 1. Lev Polugaevsky (URS) 7 points, 2. Eric Lobron (FRG) 7, 3. Miso Cebalo (YUG) 6.5, 4. Vlastimil Hort (FRG) 6.5, 5. Alon Greenfeld (ISR) 6, 6. Anthony Miles (ENG) 6, 7. John Nunn (ENG) 6, 8. Robert Hübner (FRG) 5.5, 9. Ian Rogers (AUS) 5.5, 10. Viktor Korchnoi (SUI) 5, 11. Josef Klinger (AUT) 3.5, 12. Werner Hug (SUI) 1.5.

Final standings in the closed master tournament: 1. Stefan Kindermann (FRG) 7.5 points, 2. Yehuda Grünfeld (ISR) 7, 3. Aldo Haïk (FRA) 7. 12 participants.

Final standings in the open master tournament: 1. Daniel Campora (ARG) 9.5 points, 2. Patrick Wolff (USA) 8.5, 3. Joerg Hickl (FRG) 8. 153 participants.
