Tournament Review

The second Phillips & Drew Kings was played at County Hall, London, from 15 to 30 April 1982. The field was headed by Anatoly Karpov and Jan Timman, then the two highest-rated players in the world. Other participants were Lajos Portisch, Boris Spassky, Ulf Andersson, Ljubomir Ljubojević, John Nunn, Larry Christiansen, Tony Miles, Yasser Seirawan, Jonathan Speelman, Efim Geller, Andrew Jonathan Mestel and Nigel Short.

Portisch took over the tournament after the early rounds, scoring five straight wins after two opening draws. In round 8 he was beaten by Mestel, and in round 10 he lost the brilliancy-prize game to Timman. On the same day Viktor Korchnoi and protestors from the Women's Campaign for Soviet Jewry demonstrated outside County Hall. Karpov beat Nunn and joined Andersson and Portisch in first place.

Seirawan then defeated Karpov, reportedly with analysis prepared with Korchnoi, but Karpov recovered by beating Portisch in the penultimate round. In the final round Karpov beat Spassky, Andersson defeated Mestel, and Seirawan beat Miles for his fourth straight win. Andersson and Karpov shared first place on 8.5/13, with Seirawan clear third on 8/13.

The ancillary Knights tournament was won by John Fedorowicz and William Watson with 10/15. The brilliancy prize went to Timman for his win over Portisch in round 10.
