Tournament Review

The Phillips & Drew tournament was the strongest London event for many years and marked the start of the biannual series later known as the Phillips & Drew GLC Kings. It was organized with support from Phillips & Drew, the Greater London Council and the British Chess Federation. The main play was held at County Hall, with adjournments at the Grosvenor House Hotel because County Hall closed in the evening.

The original plan included Anatoly Karpov, but the Soviet federation declined invitations for its players. Robert Hübner and Vlastimil Hort also did not play. The final field still included Viktor Korchnoi, Florin Gheorghiu, Jan Timman, Ulf Andersson, Ljubomir Ljubojević, Bent Larsen, Gyula Sax, Anthony Miles, Gennadi Sosonko, Walter Browne, Michael Stean, John Nunn, Jonathan Speelman and 14-year-old Nigel Short.

Korchnoi arrived almost directly from his Candidates quarterfinal with Petrosian. Short was swindled by Miles in the first round and struggled afterwards. The tournament ended in a three-way tie between Miles, Andersson and Korchnoi on 8.5/13. Miles took first on Sonneborn-Berger, in one of his best results to that date. Speelman made his first GM norm.

The parallel Phillips & Drew Knights was won jointly by George Botterill and Paul van der Sterren with 10.5/14.
