The 3rd Orense International Tournament

The third edition of the Orense International Tournament again assembled a strong international field and confirmed the steady growth of the event. The competition was closely fought, with no player able to establish an easy superiority during the opening rounds.

The leading grandmasters were forced to work hard against a group of ambitious international masters and younger players. The struggle for first place remained open until the final phase, and several participants still had realistic chances of finishing among the leaders as the decisive rounds approached.

The tournament was characterised by a high proportion of hard-fought games. The players generally avoided premature draws, and even apparently quiet positions often developed into long technical battles. The Spanish representatives alternated good performances with missed opportunities, while the foreign contingent showed greater steadiness over the full distance.

From an organisational point of view the event again deserved praise. The conditions offered to the players, the regular publication of information and the interest shown by the local public all helped to consolidate Orense as a permanent international tournament. After only three editions it had already become an established part of the Spanish winter programme.

The final classification reflected the balance of the event: the winner owed his success less to spectacular domination than to greater consistency, better handling of the critical moments and the ability to convert small advantages.
