Tournament Review

Gheorghiu Wins the 2nd Orense International Tournament

The second Orense International Tournament, played from 8 to 21 January, brought together a strong and varied field of twelve players. The event belonged to FIDE Category 8 and was conducted as an eleven-round all-play-all tournament.

Romanian Grandmaster Florin Gheorghiu was the clear and deserved winner. He took the lead at an early stage and maintained a firm grip on first place, combining positional security with great effectiveness in the decisive games. His final score of 8½ points left him a full point ahead of Pal Benko and Nikola Padevsky.

Benko and Padevsky shared second place with 7½ points. Both remained within reach of the leader for much of the competition, but Gheorghiu's greater consistency ultimately settled the issue. Victor Ciocaltea and Bruno Parma followed with 6½ points. Arturo Pomar and the Cuban Eldis Cobo scored 5½.

The Spanish representatives did not achieve the result they had hoped for. Pomar finished in the middle of the table after a solid but insufficiently forceful performance, while Antonio Medina scored 4½ points. Among the remaining players, Edmar Mednis also obtained 4½, Janosevic 4, Durao 3½ and De Castro 2.

The tournament was notable for its fighting spirit and for the international strength of its line-up. Orense thus confirmed the progress made since the first edition and established itself as one of the important winter events on the Spanish calendar.
