Tournament Review

The Nijmegen club Strijd met Beleid (SMB) celebrates its 100th anniversary by organizing a ten-player tournament whose winner would earn the right to challenge Euwe. After winning the Hoogovens tournament in January, Lodewijk Prins is the strongest in Hotel Atlanta on the Grote Markt. The match with Euwe does not take place, because Prins has to withdraw for health reasons. The six-player tournament played in the Amsterdam Chess House, whose winner earns the right to challenge Euwe, resulted in a clear victory for Theo van Scheltinga in April 1947. Three quarters of a year later, in the recreation room of the Amsterdam police headquarters, Euwe again proves too strong for the challenger. With three wins and five draws, Euwe triumphed 5½ -2½.
