Winners of Hoogevens-99 obtained the same places in the tournament crosstable as in current FIDE and Professional rating lists: 1. Kasparov 2. Anand 3. Kramnik. Vassily Ivanchuk wasn't in the his best form. Many games were interesting and important, but Kasparov-Svidler from round 12 became really critical:

Kasparov,G (2812) - Svidler,P (2703) D97
Hoogovens Wijk aan Zee NED (12), 01.13.1999

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3 dxc4 6.Qxc4 0-0 7.e4 a6 8.e5 b5 9.Qb3 Nfd7 10.e6 fxe6 11.Be3!

Unusual move in the well-known position. Idea is to play 12.h4 after 11...Nb6 and 12.a4 after 11...Nf6 (Kasparov).
11... Nb6 12.h4 Nc6 13.h5 Rxf3 14.gxf3 Nxd4 15.Rd1 c5 16.Bxd4 cxd4 17.hxg6 h6 18.Rh5 Qe8 19.Ne2 Qxg6 20.Rh1 Kh8 21.Rg1 Qf7 22.Nxd4 Nd5 23.Qd3 Bd7 24.Qe4 Rc8 25.Bd3 Nf6 26.Qh4 Rc5 27.Ne2 Nd5 28.Rg6 Qf8 29.Qe4 Qf7 30.Kd2 Nf6 31.Qe3 1-0

Really, great game...
Kasparov: ...but, personally, I feel my win against Svidler was my best game here. I found a completely new concept and my opponent played extremely well. I found all the best moves. I had to make ten «only moves» in a row. I think it is my biggest accomplishment.

But, of course, now is really hard to find completely new concepts... Look at the following game:

Levtchouk,G - Duong,T D97,Quebec Invitational (7), 1992
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Qb3 dxc4 6.Qxc4 0-0 7.e4 a6 8.e5 b5 9.Qb3 Nfd7 10.e6 fxe6 11.Be3 Nb6 12.h4 Nd5 13.h5 Nxe3 14.fxe3 c5 15.hxg6 hxg6 16.Qc2 e5 17.dxc5 Bf5 18.e4 Bg4 19.Be2 Bxf3 20.gxf3 Nc6 21.Qb3+ Rf7 22.Kf2 Nd4 23.Qd1 e6 24.Qg1 b4 25.Na4 Nxf3 26.Bxf3 Qd2+ 27.Kg3 Qf4+ 28.Kh3 Qxf3+ 29.Qg3 Qxe4 30.Raf1 Raf8 31.Qg2 Qd3+ 0-1

Nevertheless, 11.Be3! seems strong anyway... May be in his game against Shirov Kasparov intoduced a real novelty:

Shirov,A (2726) - Kasparov,G (2812) B90
Hoogovens Wijk aan Zee NED (7), 24.01.1999

It was the first game between Shirov and Kasparov after Shirov-Kramnik 1998 match. (By the way, Shirov has extremely bad score in his games against Kasparov. More information available on the our special page).
