World Team Championship, 20th October 2001: Ukraine-Russia 2.5-1.5
Ivanchuk - Svidler 1/2
Ponomariov - Dreev 1:0
Baklan - Grischuk 1/2
Eingorn - Sakaev 1/2
The Ukrainian team owes its victory in the event to Ruslan Ponomariov. This is not just because of his two victories in the decisive matches with Armenia and Russia (Ukraine won both with a minimal margin), but also the important role that Ponomariov played throughout the tournament. This guy, who turned 18 right before the event, became a real leader of his team.
