Premiere of the Top Ten
The book on the historic chess tournament
In June 2000 the Frankfurt Chess Classic achieved something really special: for the first time in 149 years of chess history all Top Ten players participated in one event. The number one in the world rating list Gary Kasparov, the new world champion Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Alexei Shirov, Alexander Morozevich and Peter Leko competed as the Top Six in the Fujitsu Siemens Giants. The world's no. 7, Michael Adams, won the Frankfurt Chess Masters ahead of Vassily Ivanchuk and Evgeny Bareev. Besides the no. 10 in the world rating list, Vesselin Topalov, the member of the Russian Olympic team champion Sergey Rublevsky, the Dutch champion Loek van Wely, Artur Yussupov and German rapid chess champion Robert Rabiega played in the Frankfurt Chess Masters. The historic event produced outstanding games among the world's elite and in the matches against the chess programme Fritz on Primergy.
In December 2000 the tournament book «Premiere of the Top Ten» lays claim to document in words and pictures this new dimension in chess. The printed work aims to match the unique tournament. No chess book publisher dared to risk producing in a new quality standard: 360 pages of the best tournament of all times and all the games in the Giants and the Masters with more than 200 pictures and cartoons. Everything in four colour print! However, the organizers of the Frankfurt Chess Classic refused to depart from this level and therefore have published the book themselves.
Participating grandmasters here analyse a great many of their games: Vishy Anand reveals the secrets of all his wins which enabled him to become the new rapid chess champion in Frankfurt. Besides in-depth analysis, an extensive interview offers the reader an insight into his thinking. Co-author Artur Yussupov undertakes a detailed examination of numerous games during the main events and the Ordix Open. The top board in the German team, who, as member of the silver medal winning team, once again performed in an outstanding fashion at the Olympiad in Istanbul, also analyses his games in the Fischer Random Chess match with the computer. Hartmut Metz and Harald Fietz document all facets of the Frankfurt Chess Classic from the drawing of lots, done by Frankfurt football coach Felix Magath, right up to the very last move in the Fujitsu Siemens Giants. Many interviews, background information on the prospects for computer chess and reports on everything that happened during the ten days of the Frankfurt Chess Classics complete this book with a total of 185 games.
