From 7th to 17th July 2002 the Kiev Chess Club «Avangard» hosted the competition in commemoration of the chess master Yuri N. Sakharov. He ranges with those few who figured the history of chess in Ukraine in the second half of the twentieth century. Obscure facts of Yuri Sakharov's tragic life were made public in February 2002 after the newspaper «Kievskie Vedomosti» published a series of articles about Ukrainian chess players under the general title of «Captives of Soviet Kaissa».
