On 7 June 2002 an extraordinary congress of the Ukrainian Chess Federation in Kyiv has elected Mr. Victor M. Petrov President of the Federation. Earlier Mr. Petrov occupied the position of a Vice-President.
Contrary to rumours and expectations, Dr. Ivan S. Byk (the former President of the Federation) and Mr. Sergey V. Momot, President of the Joint-Stock Company DANKO (first vice-president of the Federation), were not seeking election to the presidential position during voting.
VICTOR MIKHAILOVICH PETROV:
Head of the political party «People's Rukh of Ukraine» Secretariat, former minister of machine-building and conversion, a deputy of the Supreme Rada of the first convocation.
Master candidate, the 1975 chess champion of Poltava Region, a three-time winner of the «Parliament Game» chess tournaments.
