Championship of Odessa City and Region
January 10 - February 13, 2000

A Win for Young Andrey Sumets
The chess championship of the Odessa City and Region took place between January 10 - February 13, 2000.
The young chess players set the tone and the winner (just like last year) was Andrey Sumets (ELO 2439), a rapidly improving player with a very aggressive style. He considers the Tobak - Sumets game as his best, where he executed a series of beautiful sacrifices.
I would also like to mention his purposeful game against M.Khazankin, in which Andrey put into practice one of his interesting opening ideas.
The main competition to the winner came from Yuri Drozdovskij (ELO 2415) who is one of most impressive Ukrainian juniors and double ex-champion of Europe in the children's categories (1996, 1997).
It is hoped that these two chess players will ensure the future success of Odessa chess in the near future.
The event was organized by the regional chess club and sponsored by 'Vertex' company.
