Anthony Miles 23rd April 1955 - 12th November 2001

Anthony John Miles

We have just received the very sad news that English grandmaster Tony Miles died at his home in Birmingham today (12 November 2001), aged only 46. Tony Miles was England's first world-class professional player of the modern era, becoming the first England player to qualify for the over-the-board grandmaster title in 1976 and going on to establish himself as one of the top players on the circuit during Anatoly Karpov's reign as world champion.

It is with a profound sense of sadness that we append Tony Miles' October 2001 ChessCafe column with this paragraph announcing the death of the popular British grandmaster. This may be the last chess article Tony wrote. That of course is not important. What is far more significant is that the 46-year old free spirit of the chess world will never be heard from again. Rest in peace, Tony. We will miss you...

Terrible news has reached me of the death of Britains first over-the-board Grandmaster Tony Miles. Born in Birmingham in 1955 he battled with Bill Hartston and Ray Keene to become Britain's first GM. He achieved this at the age of 20 in February 1976. Miles went on to become one of the most colourful and controversial leading Grandmasters in the World for the next ten years and was still a formidable opponent and very active player up to his death at the tragically early age of 46.

English Grandmaster Tony Miles died today at the age of 46 of natural causes likely related to his diabetes. The UK's first GM, who briefly played for the USA in the late 80s (and Australia in the early 90s!?), Miles had a tremendous tournament career. An outspoken and original character, he will be missed for both his games and his personality.

12.11.01 It is with great sorrow that we report that Grandmaster Anthony John Miles passed away today. Tony was born in Birmingham on April 23, 1955 and got his title at the age of 20, narrowly beating Raymond Keene to become Britain's first GM. He was an entertaining and imaginative player, always good for a surprise even against the strongest players in the world.
