The exciting 2-day match resulted in a surprise victory for Anatoly Karpov against the world's top-ranked player, Garry Kasparov.
In this historic event hosted by X3D Technologies, the life long rivals faced off in four 50-minute time-controlled games over two nights.
Kasparov took the first game Thursday night and was leading most of the second. Near the end of the second game, Karpov turned it around, stunning the crowd with an upset victory. The two champions were even going into day two.

The second game resulted in a draw, leaving the final match score 2.5 Karpov, 1.5 Kasparov. In a press conference following the match, Kasparov indicated that he'd never quite recovered from Karpov's win in the second game.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bf4 dxc4 6.Rc1 0-0 7.e3 Nbd7 Almost a novelty, but I found one email game in the ChessBase Online database. 7...Be6 was played by Kasparov in Game 1; recently I have participated in 2 minutes blitz game that developed like this: 7...c5 8.Bxc4 cxd4 9.Nxd4 h6 10.Nf3 Nfd7 11.Qd2 b6 12.Bd5 Nc5 13.Bxa8 Nd3+ 14.Ke2 Ba6 15.Kd1 Nxf2+ 16.Kc2 Bd3+ 17.Kb3 Na6 18.Qxf2 b5 19.Nxb5 Qxa8 20.Qd2 Qd5+ 21.Ka3 Qxb5 22.b4 Nxb4 23.Qxb4 Qa6+ 24.Kb3 Bf5 25.Be5 Be6+ 26.Kb2 Qxa2+ 27.Kc3 Rc8+ 28.Kd3 Bf5+ 29.e4 Qd5+ , and White (my friend, German IM Hans-Hubert Sonntag) won on time somewhere around here. I am grateful for KK who gave me the inspiration to recall all these quite silly moves. 8.Bxc4 c5N 8...c6 9.0-0 Nb6 10.Bd3 +/= Green-Dunn, IECC email 1998. 9.dxc5 Nxc5 10.0-0 Be6 11.Bxe6 Nxe6 12.Be5 Qxd1 13.Rfxd1 Rfd8 14.Kf1 Nd7 15.Bxg7 Kxg7 16.Nd5 Nb6 17.Nxb6 axb6 18.a3 Rxd1+ 19.Rxd1 Rc8 20.Ke2 Kf6 21.Ne1 White is still slightly better, but what Kasparov did on the two following moves requires special explanation that I am hardly able to give. Possibly he simply forgot how a rook moves! 21...Rc4 22.Rd7 Nc5? 23.Rc7! Black loses a pawn now. 23...b5 23...Ke6 24.b4 Kd6 25.Rc8 Kd7 26.Rf8 (or 26.Rb8 ) 26...Ne4 27.Rxf7. 24.f3! Incredible.
