Kasparov vs Deep Junior will be held in New York City in January 2003

PRESS RELEASE

FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov today announced that the match between 1st World Ranked Garry Kasparov and World Champion among computer programs «Deep Junior» will be held in New York City in January 2003.
In Jerusalem two preliminary games will be played (7th - 9th January 2003), the results of which will not take an official character.
The official part of the match will start on January 22, 2003. Games will be played on 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th, 31st January and 2nd February. The closing ceremony and press conference will be held on February 3rd.
The President of FIDE stated in Moscow «We considered proposals from different cities and decided that this match with a prize fund of $1m had to be staged in New York City. Originally intended to take place in Jerusalem, this match will start in the «Holy City» where THE JERUSALEM CUP match will be held and then the matches will move to Manhattan.»
The match will be held under the auspices of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and International Computer Games Association (ICGA) with classical time control.

The Prize Fund of US $1m with $500,000 honorarium to Garry Kasparov, with the other half being divided in the following proportion: Winner gets $300,000, Loser $200,000 and in the case of a tie, $250,000 each.
