I am very grateful to John Saunders, who is editor-in-chief of both the famous British Chess Magazine and the BCM Online website, for his personal permission to re-publish at chess-sector.odessa.ua the following text and photograph of Sergey Karyakin. This material forms only a fragment of the extensive BCM Hastings Congress coverage (© 2003 British Chess Magazine) --M.G.

Sergey Karyakin: «I Like Walking on My Hands»
John Saunders reports:
Round 9 (5 Jan)
Copyright: 2003 British Chess Magazine Today's action starts at 2.15pm (not 9.30am as I have seen elsewhere on the web). The Sunday Telegraph carried an interview with Sergey Karyakin this morning (I couldn't find it on their website - but if someone else tracks down an online version, let me know). There were no particularly stunning revelations, but it was well written, by Nigel Farndale. Of course, as a Sunday Telegraph journalist, he will be acutely aware that his editor, Dominic Lawson, is a chess buff. As well as being a very competent player himself, Lawson penned a book on the notorious Kasparov-Short match of 1993 called The Inner Game . He has some connections in high places in chess, the media and politics who all share the name Nigel(la): his father, former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson, his sister, TV celebrity cook Nigella Lawson, and his buddy Nigel Short (uncoincidentally the regular Sunday Telegraph chess columnist). Such is Lawson's keenness on chess that he made the trip down to Hastings to watch play during round 7.
Farndale's account mentioned that Karyakin's other interests included acrobatics. On being asked more about this, Karyakin said that he «liked walking on his hands». Farndale's suggestion that he do this to distract opponents between moves was greeted by boyish giggles. On his chess training, Sergey reveals that his father was very strict if he didn't train properly: «He would punish me with physical exercises such as push-ups and sit-ups». He now trains for six hours a day, with three hours spent at the computer and another three spent with his coach (GM Borovikov, playing in the Challengers). Does he go to school? «Only sometimes», confesses the young grandmaster from Kramatorsk. He travels to tournaments with his coach but not his parents.
Regarding his manner, Farndale describes him as possessing considerable sangfroid and unnerving composure. I can attest to that, having taken his photograph during the tournament.
