Efim Petrovich Geller died on Tuesday 17th November 1998 at the age of 73. He was:
Winner of Ukrainian Chess Championships (1950, 1957, 1958, 1959)
Soviet Union Champion (1955 and 1979)
World Championship Candidate (1953-1971)
World Chess Olympiad Champion (1952, 1954, 1956, 1962, 1968, 1970, 1980)
Winner of about 20 important international tournaments since 1957.
He had positive score against four World Champions (Botvinnik, Smyslov, Petrosian and Fischer) and level records against Karpov and Euwe.
Best player of Odessa and «one of the greatest chess players of all time» (The Week in Chess).
