| Competition format: | The format was a source of disagreement and ultimately led to Fischer’s resignation of the title. Fischer insisted on the following terms: the first player to score 10 wins would become World Champion, while Fischer would retain the title in the event of a 9–9 tie. FIDE and Karpov refused to accept the second condition, as it would effectively have given the reigning Champion a two-point handicap. |
