Tournament Review

The 37th US Chess Championship took place in Los Angeles, California, from 28 July to 9 August 1991. It was the second and final US Championship in knockout format (same match rules as in 1990). Gata Kamsky won the title, defeating Joel Benjamin in the final.

Composite score highlights from the source table: Kamsky +6-1=3 (7.5/10), Benjamin +5-3=5 (7.5/13), Gulko +4-2=3 (5.5/9), Fedorowicz +3-3=2 (4/8).

Quick notes:

  • Second and last US Championship played in knockout format.
  • Kamsky took the title after a final win over Benjamin.
  • Top finishers played noticeably different game counts due to match lengths and tie-breaks.
