In this tournament, Lombary was World Junior Champion, Kalme was US Intercollegiate Champion, Weinstein was US Junior Champion, and Fischer was defending US Champion. In addition, Reshevsky was still considered "Champion of the Western Hemisphere" on the basis of two matches he won against Najdorf in the early 1950's. This title was quietly forgotten after Fischer became a credible title threat. But Fischer was not rated higher than Reshevsky in a US Championship until next year's event. |
