Tournament Review

The 1995 Linares tournament was not quite the old imperial Linares, but that is precisely why it is so memorable. It began under a cloud: Luis Rentero had even announced its cancellation, irritated by political and calendar conflicts around the PCA cycle, and only the intervention of the mayor of Linares plus new backing from Turespana kept the event alive. The field was thinner than in the previous year - Kasparov, Anand, Kamsky, Kramnik, Gelfand, Salov and Judit Polgar were all absent for different reasons - yet the tournament preserved its identity: pride, tension, strong personalities and a constant insistence that Linares should still feel like the "Wimbledon of chess".

There was also a real sense of transition. The old aristocracy was still present in Karpov, but around him gathered ambitious younger rivals eager to use Linares as a springboard. Early on, some observers worried that the fighting tradition of the event might be fading after a cluster of quick draws, yet that fear soon disappeared. The tournament repeatedly swung from apparent calm to nervous drama: time scrambles, long endgames, abrupt changes of leader, health scares, quarrels, and a crowd that sensed the title race could still break in several directions almost until the end.

The central story was Vasyl Ivanchuk's victory over himself. Everyone knew he had the talent; the old doubt was whether his nerves would allow him to convert brilliance into a first prize under pressure. Leontxo Garcia's review makes that theme explicit from the start, recalling Karpov's old remark that Ivanchuk could become world champion only if his nerves permitted it. In Linares 1995 they finally did. Ivanchuk played with unusual emotional balance, chose his moments well, and won the event undefeated for the third time, just before his 26th birthday.

The tournament also had a distinctly Spanish sub-plot. Miguel Illescas suffered recurring tachycardia from round one, had to interrupt games and visit hospital, and still produced one of the performances of his life. He was no longer intimidated by the elite, drew with Ivanchuk when the Ukrainian could not break through, and in the last round came close to defeating Karpov in a six-hour battle before the champion escaped into a draw. Alexei Shirov, already living in Spain and openly pursuing Spanish nationality, added another layer to the atmosphere: he finished shared third, less wild than usual, but highly effective.

As for the sporting race itself, the event refused to follow a straight line. Topalov and Beliavsky were the early surprise leaders; Illescas briefly rose to the top group; Karpov started with four draws, then accelerated with a series of model victories and seemed to be taking control. His win over Topalov in round ten looked like the champion's decisive blow, especially because he also remained unbeaten. But Ivanchuk answered in the only way that mattered: he held Karpov in their direct encounter, then finished with wins over Dreev, Tiviakov and Akopian. That late surge gave him clear first place with 10/13, ahead of Karpov on 9; Shirov and Topalov shared third on 8.

What remained after the scores was the feeling of a tournament rich in human detail. Karpov analyzed endlessly after games, fought a strange psychological mini-match with Illescas over backgammon in the hotel lobby before the final round, and even lashed out at Dreev for lack of professionalism. Ivanchuk, once famous for nervous eccentricities, now seemed calmer, more mature and more dangerous. The slogan displayed at the venue - "Passion for life" - turned out to be an apt summary. Linares 1995 was a tournament born in crisis, played in suspense, and won by a genius who, for once, kept both his chess and his nerves under perfect control.
