Tournament Review

The organizers took great care with publicity, mobilizing the entire press, radio, and even Spanish TV. The playing hall at the House of Culture was ideal in every respect, since even from the very back rows one could closely follow the progress of the games thanks to the beautiful demonstration boards. Luis Rentero was the factotum, ably supported by A. García, F. Reche, J. A. Martínez, C. Sánchez, and the young Juan Carlos Sánchez and Paquito Ortega. The closing dinner was outstanding, and among the prizes we would highlight a mining headframe and four truly beautiful silver miner figures.

As distinguished visitors throughout the tournament, I was able to greet Kuperman, Alvariño, Torán, Faustino González, R. Molina, Ochoa, Montecatine, etc.

If space allowed, I would like to devote an entire page to highlighting the extraordinary public of Linares, who filled the hall every day at any hour. Even during adjourned games until one in the morning, and in the mornings during the second adjournments when they occurred. I have never seen such crowds, not even in major Spanish cities where important tournaments were held.

My congratulations to all of Linares, because they truly were the great victors of chess in this Second Tournament of their city.

The technical direction was in my charge, and I truly did not have the slightest problem, given the correct conduct of the participants and the quality of my collaborators, Benjamín Espuny and Luis Haritver. Thanks to everyone.

JOSE M. GONZALEZ
