The run for the first place was mainly between West Germany and the Netherlands, two teams which met on the last day. At the start of the last round West Germany were in one point lead. A 2½-1½ victory would bring the Dutch team the overall win, but they failed to achieve it. The full results of this last round match full of tension were as follows: Timman ½ Mäder; Ligterink 0 Juhnke; Böhm ½ Kiffmeyer; Wiersma 0 Longwitz.
