Canada—Australia 4½—5½
radio match, 13th—14th June 1947
In the first radio match of a series in the British Commonwealth, Australia won from Canada, by one point, 5½—4½.
Transmission difficulties permitted only 11—16 moves the first day, though play began 7 p.m. Friday, June 13 (Saturday, the 14th down-under), ran to 2 a.m. After 4 a.m. or about 9 hours play next day, Canada led 3—2 in games finished. Two wines, however, among the five games adjudicated by British correspondence champion B. H. Wood, gave Australia the winning margin.
Australia's champion, Lajos Steiner, did not play because of illness. Australia's top five boards were actually the team of Sydney and the bottom five represented Melbourne, while Canada's team was composed of city teams of Montreal and Toronto respectively.
