Coinciding with the celebrations of the bicentenary of the French Revolution, a world chess festival featuring several events took place in Clermont-Ferrand from 10 to 23 July. Among them was the first Category 14 closed tournament, according to the FIDE rating scale, ever organized in France. The Swiss player Viktor Korchnoi, the Hungarian Gyula Sax, the Soviets Jaan Ehlvest and Sergei Dolmatov, and the Frenchman Olivier Renet emerged as joint winners of the Grandmaster tournament on 23 July, each scoring 6.5 points out of 11. The surprise was provided by the young IM Renet, aged 24, who achieved his second GM norm thanks to impressive victories over Sokolov, Spraggett and Lautier, with only one defeat, against Korchnoi. Apart from this notable sporting success, mention should be made of the tourist visit by former world champion Anatoly Karpov, as well as the two open tournaments held alongside the “Masters”. The stronger of the two featured eight GMs, including the Soviet Iosif Dorfman, and 28 IMs from 19 countries. Victory was shared by the Yugoslav GMs Miodrag Todorcevic (2530), the young national champion Zdenko Kozul (2560), and the English IM Mark Hebden (2520). The guest of honor at the event, Anatoly Karpov, gave two simultaneous exhibitions, presented a living-chess game staged in Jaude, the city’s central square, and attended several official receptions, both in Clermont and in Paris, where he was an official guest of Mitterrand during the celebrations of 14 July and of the bicentenary of the Revolution. In addition to all these activities, Karpov even found time to catch a few trout, according to the local press. In total, Clermont-Ferrand attracted more than 250 players, eager to see some of the world’s best chess players, including some of the well-known “draw specialists”. The most combative were, naturally, Korchnoi, Sax and the courageous Spraggett, who fought hard in all his games despite suffering two defeats in the opening rounds. Only one player remained undefeated: the Hungarian Ribli, king of the short draws, who won only one game, against the young Joël Lautier. After his good results in Lugano, Paris and Moscow, Lautier returned to his usual inconsistency, producing a mediocre performance. Among the winners, the Hungarian Sax had led from the start of the tournament, but was caught by the ever-fighting Korchnoi after losing to Spraggett in the ninth round. In the following round it was the Frenchman Renet who joined them in first place. The final round was marked by an incident caused by confusion over the starting time of the games. Some players, including Sokolov, Dolmatov, Korchnoi and Spraggett, turned up at 8:30 in the morning, while the others arrived at ten. After three quarters of an hour of discussion and protest, it was agreed that three games would be played in the morning and the remaining three in the afternoon. In the end, Ehlvest and Dolmatov managed to join the leaders by defeating Sokolov and Spassky respectively. The organizer, René Boulier, succeeded in securing a substantial budget of 3 million francs (60 million pesetas), with support from the City Council, the Territorial Board, and the GMF insurance company. |
