Tournament Review



Tallinn 1969

The inaugural Tallinn international tournament attracted considerable public interest. The games were played on the stage of the Republican House of Political Education, which was also being used as a film-studio set while Estonian documentary makers prepared a film about Paul Keres.

Leonid Stein led after eight rounds with 6½ points and five wins. He later fell ill with influenza and played his final three games in his hotel room. All three of these unusual "home" encounters ended in quick victories, giving Stein first place by a margin of 1½ points.

The closing rounds also brought a strong finish by Mato Damjanović, who scored 4 points from his final five games. Eero Böök remained undefeated in his last three games against grandmasters. During one round the hall was filled by pupils of Tallinn's specialized Paul Keres chess school.

After the tournament Stein told Eduard Gufeld that he was satisfied both with first prize and with the quality of his play. Tallinn had already been a fortunate city for him: at the end of 1965 he had won the Soviet championship there.
