Tournament Review

Grandmasters vs. Young Masters, Sochi 1970

The Sochi tournament was played as a double Scheveningen match between a team of seven grandmasters and a team of seven young Soviet masters. It was held at the Metallurg Sanatorium in Sochi and was organized as a tournament for the Prize of the Central Committee of the Komsomol (TsK VLKSM).

The match consisted of 14 rounds on seven boards. In each round all members of one team had the same colour, with the colours alternating from round to round. Thus every young master met every member of the grandmaster team twice, once with each colour.

The grandmaster team consisted of Mikhail Tal, Leonid Stein, Alexey Suetin, Leonid Shamkovich, Vladimir Liberzon, Viktor Korchnoi and Anatoly Lutikov. The young masters were Gennady Kuzmin, Vladimir Tukmakov, Viktor Kupreichik, Mikhail Podgaets, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, Boris Gulko and Rafael Vaganian.

After the first seven rounds Vaganian had to leave Sochi for an army competition in Leningrad. He was replaced for the second half of the match by Alexander Beliavsky, who was not yet seventeen and had recently won an international junior tournament in Sukhumi.

The grandmasters led 26.5-22.5 after the first half. The second half was much closer, ending 25-24 for the grandmasters. The final team score was therefore 51.5-46.5 in favour of the grandmasters.

Individual scores for the grandmasters were: Tal 10.5/14, Stein 8.5/14, Suetin 7.5/14, Shamkovich 7.5/14, Liberzon 6.5/14, Korchnoi 6/14 and Lutikov 5/14.

Among the young masters, Kuzmin scored 9.5/14, Tukmakov 9/14, Kupreichik 7.5/14, Podgaets 7/14, Tseshkovsky 5/14 and Gulko 4.5/14. Vaganian scored 3/7 before leaving the event, while Beliavsky scored 1/7 as his replacement.

Contemporary reports emphasized the increasingly even character of the contest. After eleven rounds the grandmasters led 41.5-33.5 with two games still unfinished, and the young team performed particularly strongly in the latter part of the event. Tukmakov and Kuzmin produced the best individual results among the masters, while Tal was the leading scorer overall.
