Tournament Review

1983: The Festival in British Hands

The grandmaster tournament reaches FIDE Category 10 for the first time, something the organizers had been aiming for for some time. The representatives of the British Isles dominate the field, in the persons of Anthony Miles, rated 2585 Elo, and John Nunn, rated 2590, the two top seeds, who share first place undefeated. The third Englishman in the field, Mark Hebden, finishes sixth.

As in the previous summer, John Nunn has to share tournament victory, but unlike in 1982, his tie-break score is worse this time, making Anthony Miles the true winner. The Biel Chess Festival suits Anthony Miles very well: in his second appearance after 1977, he wins the grandmaster tournament for the second time.

For the first time, a second invitational tournament is organized. The field comprises 12 players, and in the end the Australian Ian Rogers comes out on top. In the Master Open, victory goes to Sweden in the person of Jaan Eslon. The best Swiss player, Andreas Huss, finishes third and earns an International Master norm.
