Tournament Review

Judit came, saw and conquered

Judit Polgar lived up to expectations in the eighth Sigeman tournament, played in Malmo from 23 to 29 May. Two wins and four draws gave her 4/6 and first place, half a point ahead of Jan Timman. Ulf Andersson scored 2.5 and Tiger Hillarp Persson 2.

The edition used an unusual format: only four grandmasters took part, playing a double round robin. Neither Swedish player seriously challenged the two visiting stars. Andersson began with two defeats as Black and only found his form near the end, while Hillarp Persson failed to win a game but remained reasonably satisfied with his debut in such elite company.

Alongside the main event, the first two rounds of an IM tournament were played at the Limhamns SK club before moving to the Hipp theatre. That competition was a success because Lars Thiede, Emil Hermansson and Bjorn Ahlander all completed title requirements. Hermansson was especially impressive, following three opening wins with a difficult save against Thiede and then finishing with two more victories.
