Tournament Review

A sombre draw record in the Sigeman tournament

Joël Lautier and Igor Miladinovic shared first place with 6/9. Lars Degerman, Ivan Sokolov and Curt Hansen followed on 5. The defining statistic was the extraordinary number of draws: 33 of 45 games, a draw rate of 73 percent, and almost half of those draws were agreed in 22 moves or fewer.

The organizers wanted a famous name in the field and invited former world champion Boris Spassky, who had played a Candidates match against Bent Larsen in Malmo in 1968. The 61-year-old Spassky, however, lacked motivation for tournament chess and drew eight games, on average in only seventeen moves. The playing hall moved from the Savoy Hotel to the more spacious Hipp theatre, where Johan Hellsten analysed the games for spectators. Internet coverage also allowed followers to watch from home.

Lautier and Miladinovic were convincing newcomers. No Swedish player defeated a foreign guest, although Degerman came within half a point of a grandmaster norm. In the last round Lautier took advantage of the chance created by the short draws on the other leading boards and beat Curt Hansen quickly to join Miladinovic in first place. Degerman needed a win over Hector for a GM result, but Hector defended the rook ending and forced a repetition.
