Tournament Review

Hellers wins in Malmo

Ferdinand Hellers completed a splendid early-summer campaign by winning the grandmaster tournament in Malmo ahead of a strong group of foreign players. His half-point margin may look narrow, but throughout the event he gave the impression that he still had another gear available.

The category XI tournament was organized by Limhamns SK in mid-June under the official name Sigeman Wernbro & Co Grandmaster Tournament, after the local law firm came in as sponsor. One of its partners, Johan Sigeman, was himself a strong Malmo player. The organizers hoped to make both this event and the accompanying international junior tournament annual fixtures.

The purpose was partly to give Hellers a serious final test before the Biel Interzonal and to expose the club's leading players to strong opposition at the Savoy Hotel. Hellers was the only Swede able to match the foreign guests. He played confidently, while the other home players managed only occasional successes against one another. Ian Rogers began with three wins, but Hellers caught him in round four and then defeated Margeir Petursson and Eduardas Rozentalis. Oleg Romanishin remained the chief challenger, though he failed to convert an adjourned game against Magnus Eriksson after eight hours and 85 moves.

Hellers entered the closing rounds a point ahead of Lars Bo Hansen. His draws were not bloodless: he held advantages against both Hector and Eriksson and escaped difficulties against Romanishin. Hansen secured second place by beating Brynell in a lively last-round game. The final score was Hellers 6.5/9, Hansen 6, Romanishin, Rozentalis, Petursson and Rogers 5.5.
