Tournament Review

Michael Wiedenkeller

The Tournament of My Life

Sometimes one experiences successes one did not believe possible. Self-confidence grows, the opposition seems to shrink, and one simply cannot lose.

In this year's Eksjö tournament everything went my way. My play worked better than ever before, and the points kept pouring in.

What followed was that I had put myself in the winner's seat, as one of seven players tied for first place! In rounds eight and nine I played two fighting draws.

Přibyl took second place after a very lucky spurt. Thomas Ernst made a good impression and had all the prerequisites for an IM norm. He played as usual aggressively and was well prepared theoretically. See, for example, the game against the local player Gustafsson:

Gustafsson deserved a few more points; he played very well in many games but drowned 10 metres from the beach.

Already in the first round Ernst knocked down Schneider with great precision.

No, now I must reveal the secret behind my score. I arrived exhausted after the Swedish Championship but still rested in the playing hall in Eksjö. The inspiration was great, and I had promised myself to fight hard. Several of my opponents were already tired after summer-season tournaments. Schneider, for example, had played three tournaments immediately beforehand.

It may nevertheless be appropriate to mention that foreign IMs are not held in especially high regard by Swedish players. The gratifying thing is that Sweden today has about 20 players of IM strength; only tournaments are missing.

How should such tournaments be organized?

I would advise interested organizers first to ask those who have experience.

In Eksjö, as is well known, Håkan Åkvist organizes most things with knowledge, contacts and energy.

Can Sweden not create more springboards for its international aspirants?
