Tournament Review



Ornstein Overwhelming Winner in Eksjö

After the final round had been played in Eksjö Chess Club's international tournament, it was clear that Axel Ornstein had become the convincing winner, two points (!) ahead of the Bulgarian grandmaster Spassov.

Axel started the tournament with a loss to the Norwegian Moen, then suffered another setback in round seven against Spassov, but otherwise scored eight wins and one draw, in the final round against Lars-Åke Schneider. An impressive result.

Unfortunately, the fine score was not enough for a GM norm. Rothén had no Elo rating and therefore had to be excluded from the norm calculation, which was consequently based on 8/10; Ornstein reached 7½ and missed the coveted norm by half a point.

Konstanty Kaiszauri began the tournament best of all with 2½ points from the first three rounds. He was then unbeaten until late in the tournament, but lost in the ninth round to Ornstein in a fine attacking game.
