Tournament Review

In the final days of August, the fourth edition of the now traditional Montilla-Moriles Wine Tournament was held in Montilla. This year the organizers set out to offer a competition of the highest possible strength, and they succeeded fully, bringing together eight grandmasters and two international masters in a Category 12 tournament, a level comfortably within the classification established by FIDE. It is enough to recall that such a level, comparable to that of the recent Madrid tournament, is reached only very rarely anywhere in the world during the course of a year.

However, with the number of players limited to ten, such a high category can only be achieved by assembling a very homogeneous field of masters with strong Elo ratings. From this basic premise follows an almost unavoidable danger: a marked equality of strength tends to produce a large number of draws. A glance at the final table confirms the extremely small differences in score and the fact that, out of 45 games, only eight ended decisively — a truly negligible percentage.

The organization in Montilla, excellent in every respect, goes to great lengths to stage a magnificent tournament, but grandmasters tend to take risks against one another only in very exceptional cases. It is a vicious circle that is difficult to break.

This does not mean that the games lacked fighting spirit, since quick draws were in fact not especially numerous. Rather, the point is that, from a positional standpoint, it is very difficult to obtain any real advantage against highly experienced players. Moreover, on the rare occasions when one side did achieve a certain superiority, the opponent's iron defence frequently restored the balance. On the other hand, none of the participants could really be regarded as a particularly incisive player.

As for the result itself, Radulov certainly achieved the greatest success of his career, since, according to his Elo rating, he was not among the favourites. It was enough for him to win two games after gaining an opening advantage, and then to defend successfully in the remaining encounters. He was in imminent danger of defeat only once, in a rook ending against Gheorghiu, who, incidentally, achieved the dubious “record” of drawing all his games.
