Tournament Review

The Spanish air clearly suits the German IM Hecht wonderfully. To his victories in Olot in 1971 and at the Costa del Sol earlier this year, he has now added his triumph in the 2nd Montilla-Moriles International Tournament, held from 24 August to 1 September in the picturesque Córdoba town of Montilla.

The event, which brought together four grandmasters, four international masters and two national masters, was a true success in sporting terms, organization and public attendance. It had as its incomparable setting the Montilla-Moriles wineries, specially decorated and air-conditioned to serve as the ideal venue for a chess tournament.

Hecht, who together with Kurajica and Rossolimo was the player with the fewest draws, took the lead from the start of the event, always pursued by O’Kelly and Medina in a spectacular and genuinely uncertain head-to-head struggle with the final standings in view, while two of the great favourites, Pomar and Damjanovic, were quickly left behind.

In the seventh round, when it seemed that O’Kelly and Hecht would be the sole contenders for the final victory, Medina defeated the German in fine style, turning things upside down.

The last round was reached with Hecht, O’Kelly and Medina tied for the lead on 5.5 points, level with Rossolimo, who had reacted extraordinarily after his initial stumble against O’Kelly, scoring 5.5 points in the following seven rounds. The draw paired:

  • Hecht–Rossolimo
  • O’Kelly–Kurajica
  • Damjanovic–Medina

If the Spaniard defeated the strong Yugoslav, the tournament victory would be his. But while the Spaniard could not overcome Damjanovic’s resistance, the German spoiled Spanish hopes by defeating Rossolimo.

Since the tournament was Category 8 in the Elo system, Medina, in the event of victory, would have reached the 6.5 points that would automatically have given him a grandmaster norm. A pity. Nevertheless, the Catalan’s performance was frankly notable, and we hope that in the not too distant future he will attain the highest international title.

For next year, the organization of this young Spanish event plans to invite Smyslov, Spassky, Portisch, Ivkov, Gligoric, Donner, Hecht, Pomar and Medina for the 3rd Montilla-Moriles International Tournament.
