Tournament Review

Varna 83 - Espig Had No Rivals...

From 1 to 15 May the 22nd traditional Golden Sands international tournament was held in Varna. The participants stayed at the luxurious Cherno More Hotel. With an average rating of 2432, the event was Category VIII. For the Bulgarian national-team players it served as a final rehearsal before the European Team Championship, and their performance was therefore of particular interest.

Overall, the picture was optimistic. The tournament produced lively and in most cases uncompromising chess. In the previous year's grandmaster tournament in Plovdiv there had been 65 draws to only 26 decisive games; in Varna the ratio was 42 draws to 36 decisive games. The contrast was even clearer in games between Bulgarian players themselves: only three had been decisive in Plovdiv, compared with twelve in Varna. The "tradition" of Bulgarians drawing one another had been seriously broken.

Yet some old weaknesses remained. In recent years the international tournaments in Bulgaria had too often been won by foreign players who were not necessarily among the biggest names. In Varna no Bulgarian seriously entered the fight for first place, and winner Lutz Espig eventually finished two full points ahead of Kirov and Meduna.

The high level of fighting spirit also produced dramatic reversals. Spiridonov, for example, once had two extra pawns and a decisive attack against Inkiov, yet made a gross blunder and immediately had to resign. To his credit, the grandmaster recovered psychologically, later winning three games and losing only one more.

National champion Inkiov finished on the same score. More had been expected of him, but it became clear that he was tired after the Banja Luka tournament, which had ended only a few days before Golden Sands.

The 18-year-old Kiril Georgiev performed successfully and achieved his second international-master norm. The rapidly improving junior showed that he could both attack and defend with equal confidence, and his precise, cool defence in difficult positions made a particularly strong impression.
